Tree Preservation Orders
Understanding whether a tree on your property is protected, and what that means for any work you want to carry out, is something many homeowners find confusing and time-consuming to navigate alone.
Vale Estate Management provides clear, practical guidance and professional documentation relating to Tree Preservation Orders and tree reports across Leicester and the wider Leicestershire area
As qualified tree surgeons, we are here to help you stay compliant, make informed decisions and avoid the costly mistakes that can arise from carrying out unauthorised works on protected trees.
Every TPO and tree report instruction we take on includes the following:
- Site visit to assess the tree or trees in question
- Identification of whether a TPO or conservation area restriction applies
- Clear explanation of your options and legal obligations
- Preparation of supporting documentation where required
- Guidance on applying for permission from the local authority
- Carrying out of permitted works once approval is granted
- Reports prepared to British Standards and local planning requirements
What Is A Tree Preservation Order?
A Tree Preservation Order is a legal protection placed on a specific tree, group of trees or woodland by the local planning authority.
Once a TPO is in place, you cannot prune, fell, top, lop or carry out any other works on the protected tree without first obtaining written permission from your local council, and carrying out unauthorised works on a TPO tree is a criminal offence that can result in significant fines.
If you believe a tree on your property may be subject to a TPO, or if you have already been told that it is, we can visit the site, confirm the position and guide you through the process of applying for permission to carry out the works you need.
We prepare the supporting documentation required by the local authority, advise on the most appropriate works to propose and carry out the permitted works once approval has been granted, ensuring everything is done in full compliance with the conditions of the consent.
Tree Reports & Surveys
Tree reports are required in a wider range of situations than many people realise, and obtaining one early can save significant time and cost further down the line.
Common reasons for commissioning a tree report include mortgage and insurance purposes, planning applications and development sites, safety concerns near buildings or public access areas, and land management and estate planning where the condition and value of trees needs to be formally assessed.
What A Tree Survey Covers
Our tree surveys are prepared by trained professionals and tailored to meet your specific requirements.
We assess tree species, age, condition and structural integrity, identify any defects that could pose a risk to people or property, map root protection areas and constraints relevant to nearby construction, and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations for retention, pruning or removal that align with local planning policy and British Standards.
